Kaisanji
Where the mountain meets the sea, there is stillness.
Monastery
Kaisanji—the temple of mountain and sea—is the spiritual core of Καλό, αμπέλι, built on the foundation of Zen. Through meditation and daily practice, visitors are invited to return to themselves. Through attention to mind, body and spirit, the way to healing begins.
Its landscape holds both mindful and elemental power. The name itself—kai (sea), san (mountain), ji (temple)—reflects its setting and purpose. Kaisanji is envisioned as a living monastery and it’s slowly becoming self-sufficient, supported by the revenue of its guest residences.
A space for year-round retreat, seasonal hospitality and the ongoing presence of the Zen Center Athens. The monastery’s architecture includes a Zendo for daily meditation, the open bell pavilion, the Hato ceremony hall and simple accommodations for monks and guests.
Retreats
Kaisanji is guided by a commitment to mental health, clarity and compassion. From October to May, the retreats draw on Zen meditation, samu (mindful work), and the arts. Through silence, embodied practice, and open exchange with teachers, a space is held for inner cultivation and attentive presence.
Days begin early, with Oryoki breakfast in the meditation hall, followed by practice, study, rest and time in nature.
This environment supports a break from patterns through depth. As distractions fall away, space opens for a more honest awareness of self and others. The retreat does not promise transformation, but creates the conditions in which change becomes possible.
A center that welcomes both seasoned practitioners and curious newcomers to share its unfolding.
Residencies
Separate from the monks’ cells, there are ten residences reserved for those who wish to experience a quiet stay within this context. Discreetly integrated into the monastery, they offer spaces designed for simplicity and harmony. Visitors are asked to align with the principles of Kaisanji, respecting its rhythm and rules. Stays are arranged by inquiry and conversation.
